'Go Wild in the Country' - Kids Camps at Ard Nahoo
How often can you point your child to the direction of some trees, ruffle his hair and say “Go ahead, Jimmy…light a fire”. When was the last time your offspring ran into the woods and made a shelter, or whittled sticks into arrows? Can you remember all of the family sitting around a campfire (lit by Jimmy) eating melting marshmallows and having a good little sing song?
The sad truth is we’re losing skills like this. Every week you can read an article informing us of our failings – we can no longer cook, mend, put up shelves or sew. Children are more au fait with an Xbox controller than the great outdoors. Schools are teaching computer skills, but keeping pupils inside during play times to avoid scraped knees (a Health and Safety admin nightmare.)
We're looking to counteract this with our Kids Camp ‘Go Wild in the Country’. With workshops led by the promisingly named Wolf Tracker, children aged 8 and up will learn all the bushcraft basics. Using a knife to whittle sticks, building small fires and creating basic shelters will all feature in the camps. Most importantly, the emphasis of all of the activities will be how to do so in a safe way, paying respect to the local environment. It’s Lord of the Flies – with responsible adults and a big steaming pot of organic pasta for lunch.
Don’t think you get out of things too easily – whilst you're welcomg to use our outdoor sauna and hot tub or to book in for a relaxing massage, accompanying adults will be right alongside the kids, pitching in and learning too.
It’s troubled times like this when the wilderness smells the sweetest. Ard Nahoo is miles away from any hint of traffic, and with no televisions or wifi you can forget about all the troubles the big, bad outside world has to offer. It’s a weekend of true escape, where you just need a good pair of boots, your child next to you and a roaring fire. And your whittling stick, of course.
