MODULE 4

The Heroic Heart

A 4-Day Myth & Yoga Intensive with Noah Mazé

Noah Mazé’s fierce and compassionate dedication to yoga inspires and holds space for students to journey deeper into body, heart, mind, and spirit than they ever could have imagined.

The first 2 days of this journey, Wednesday & Thursday, are aimed towards teachers & trainees. Friday & Saturday, are open to all levels.

The Heroic Heart: Bhagavad Gita, Mahabharata and Ramayana

The stories of heroes and heroines provide empowering and visionary allegories of our yogic journey.  In these sessions, asana will interweave asana practice with mythic narrative and yogic teachings to create a rich experience of alignment.  We will explore these teachings in both their historical context, as well as how we, as modern yogis, may derive meaning from these ancient wisdom traditions.  Each session will be asana based AND will explore tales from Mahabharata, Ramayana and other sources.  Each workshop begins with an exploration of philosophical teachings and/or a mythic narrative of yoga, and then we write ourselves into the stories through practices of asana, pranayama and meditation.  Bring an open mind, a courageous heart, and a readiness to play and work hard, with a desire to bring the great teachings of yoga directly into your life.

Teachers & Trainees

Wednesday   9:30am – 12:30pm

The Courageous Heart: Heroes and Heroines

We begin this workshop in conversations exploring archetypal symbolism of heroes and heroines within mythologies and legends of the yoga tradition, and constructing an interpretive framework for the stories we will explore in our subsequent sessions.  Embody these teachings into in a full spectrum intermediate level yoga class including pranayama and meditation.

Wednesday   2pm – 5pm

The Conscious Use of Myth and Metaphor: Theme-Based Sequencing Strategies for Yoga Teachers

This in-depth, intermediate-level session is for yoga teachers looking to dive deeper noah-mazeand gain a more sophisticated understanding of theme-based sequencing. Each pose tells a somatic story rich with symbolic and interpretive possibilities. Each sequence invites us on a journey into the theatre of body, mind and heart. In this session, we will explore a variety sequencing strategies and teaching techniques designed to give you authentic and meaningful ways to infuse inspiration into your yoga classes and to facilitate your students’ processes of embodying the teachings of yoga. Through a combination of theory and experiential practicum you will gain many tools to expand your teaching into the realms of theme weaver, storyteller, poet, philosopher and experiential educator.

Thursday   9:30am – 12:30pm

Triadic Ramayana: Rama, Sita and Hanuman

We begin this workshop exploring stories of the principal characters of Ramayana and a triadic framework of interpretive. We then embody these teachings in an intermediate level class of standing poses and backbends.

Thursday   2pm – 5pm

Draupadi and Her Five Husbands: Karma Yoga & Sequencing Strategies

Draupadi, the primary heroine of Mahabharata and common wife of the five Pandava brothers inspires this class. Hear the story of how Draupadi comes to have five husbands AND expect plenty of core and shoulder strength building, vinyasa sequencing of hip opening into intermediate arm balances.

This deeper-dive teachers’ session assumes experience teaching yoga classes, a basic knowledge of sequencing and pose knowledge, as we dive more deeply into pose based sequencing for alignment and vinyasa classes.
We will concern ourselves with alignment specifics and details in yoga pose applications; pose shape, applied anatomy and kinesiology, key actions, difficulties and common misalignments, pose improvement strategies and the use of props as teaching tools. We will consider sequencing in multiple ways, not just a sequence of poses to effectively reach the desired outcome, but also accuracy and order of instructions within any given pose, as well as the sequence of lessons within the arc of a class. This session doesn’t so much focus on sequencing intermediate or advanced poses, but rather is aimed at giving you a more sophisticated understanding of sequencing and the tools to create intelligent and effective sequences.

All Levels

Friday   9:30am – 12:30pm

Shakuntala and the Curse of the Sage

The story of Shakuntala and the Ring of Recognition (and the curse of the sage) inspires this all levels class of standing poses into fundamental arm balances.

Friday   2pm – 5pm

On the Field of Dharma: Arjuna and Krishna

The opening setting of the Bhagavadgita and the ensuing conversation between Arjuna and Krishna inspires this all levels class of forward bends, hip openers, twists and meditation.

Saturday   9:30am – 12:30pm

Savitri: Affirmation of Life

Hear how the heroine Savitri, told in Mahabharata, refuses to lose her beloved, and her power of her speech charms Lord Yama; the Lord of Death.  Her radical affirmation of life inspires this all-levels class focusing on fundamental backbending poses.

Saturday   2pm – 5pm

Nala & Damayanti: the Gift of Human Embodiment

The story of Nala and Damayanti is the affirmation of life itself. This culminating story of our hero and heroine exploration suggests that the imperfection of being human is superior to the perfection of the divine. Embody this story in this all levels class of restorative poses, inversions, pranayama and meditation.

What we cover:

  • Basic maternal anatomy and physiology;
  • Guidelines for asanas (postures) specific to each trimester and various pre- and post-natal conditions;
  • Adaptations and contraindications for a variety of asana and pranayama (breathing) techniques;
  • What to expect and how to support emotional changes; Creative use of yoga props and hands-on adjustments to ensure safety and support;
  • Pelvic floor exercises designed to ease delivery and recovery;
  • Breathing and relaxation techniques designed to create more comfort during pregnancy, labor and early mothering.

Maternal Anatomy & Physiology How is the female pelvis structured to accommodate reproduction? What are the essential features of the pelvis? How do the muscles in the pelvis function before, during and after pregnancy? What is the special place of the perineum in pregnancy, when is it at risk and how can that risk be reduced? How are the lower pelvic organs related and how does their interrelation effect pregnancy and delivery? What about the role of the abdominal muscles and diaphragm?

Guidelines for Asanas What yoga poses – and other forms of exercise – are beneficial or possibly risky during pregnancy and in the early postpartum period (and during extended periods of lactation)? What poses are indicated and contra-indicated in each trimester? How do these prescriptions vary depending on the unique woman and specific conditions such as age, number of pregnancies and other factors?

Adaptive Yoga Just as every body is different, so is every woman’s experience of pregnancy. While there are a lot of common experiences, it’s important to acknowledge and support the unique ways that women feel when pregnant and with their new baby. While some women remain very physically active all the way until their due date, others might be on bed rest. In yoga practice, these differences mean creatively adapting poses and breathing techniques to each woman’s needs.

Emotional Changes Pregnancy and childbirth can be among the most emotionally intense times in one’s life. It’s important to be attentive to shifts in feeling and to honoring those feelings as part of the larger process of change that is happening. Yoga teachers can create a supportive space for pregnant and postpartum students that makes it easier for students to relax and find the most joy along their path.

Hands-On Adjustments Skillful, sensitive, appropriate touch and verbal cues can guide and support your pregnant students to a more conscious awareness and self-refinement in their pre/post-natal yoga practice. But before we touch and speak we must first see and understand the unique qualities present in an individual student’s practice. This requires keen observation skills and an understanding of hands-on cues that both address common risks and encourage deeper inner guidance in a variety of poses.

Pelvic Floor Exercises
 In traditional Hatha yoga, we have a practice called “mula bandha” that tones the lower pelvic muscles and stimulates the awakening of uplifting energy at the root of the spine. We can usefully build on “mula bandha” techniques to explore a variety of other pelvic floor exercises that have many benefits, including a stronger and more flexible set of perineal muscles, more subtle awareness of the lower pelvic organs and their surrounding support structure, much great ease in the delivery process and reduction of a variety of physical risks that often naturally arise in pregnancy.

Breathing, Relaxation & Delivery Conscious breathing – pranayama – is at the heart of yoga. The ancient methods of pranayama offer many benefits during and after pregnancy, including more balanced energy (higher or lower as the need arises), deeper relaxation, less anxiety and more nuanced awareness of what’s happening in your body throughout pregnancy, delivery and beyond.

MODULE 7

26th – 28th January 2018

Yoga Business & Yoga for Women with Noeleen and guests

Most of us come to yoga teaching from a place of love having experienced the power of yoga to change our lives for the better in so many ways.  We naturally want to share this with others so that they too can experience a richer  and healthier life. Teaching yoga is a ‘giving’profession and we very often confuse this passion for yoga and the compassion and relationship that we build with our students as a gift, which of course it is.  However, this is not a free gift, you must value your ability and the quality of what  you are giving.

We will examine:

  • What you give and how much that is worth? – get clear on what your rates are
  • Why are you different? – your unique offering, qualifications, experience teaching, life experience – Teach what you know
  • Costings – the whole enchilada including the cost of this training!
  • The must haves for social media marketing
  • How to market on a budget
  • Write a bio
